Project Overview

Seven German companies are collaborating to create a hydrogen grid connecting Wilhelmshaven to industrial centers in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. This alliance aims to integrate hydrogen import, production, transport, and consumption projects, supporting Germany's goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2045.

Key Routes and Infrastructure

The project includes a north-south corridor between Wilhelmshaven and the Cologne chemical region and a west-east corridor to Salzgitter. The 400-kilometer transport link will be completed by 2028, utilizing both existing and new pipelines. The hydrogen pipeline network will be open to additional companies on a non-discriminatory basis.

Company Contributions

bp and Uniper are focusing on hydrogen import and production in Wilhelmshaven, including plans for an ammonia import terminal and a large-scale electrolysis plant. Gasunie, Nowega, NWO, and Thyssengas are contributing existing transport pipelines and planning new H2 pipelines. The infrastructure operators Nowega and NWO are also converting parts of their existing pipeline network to reduce the need for new construction.

Regulatory and Strategic Goals

The companies involved have signed a letter of intent to formalize their cooperation. They have also submitted their projects to the European Commission for recognition as Projects of Common Interest (PCI). The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of an integrated hydrogen network, contributing to Germany's climate goals and ensuring a secure and affordable energy supply.
