Salzgitter Orders Major Green Hydrogen Plant from ANDRITZ

At a glance
  • A 100 MW electrolysis plant will be built at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH by 2026.
  • The plant will produce 9,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
  • The project is part of the SALCOS\u00ae program for CO2-free steel production.
  • Funding is secured by German federal and state subsidies and Salzgitter AG's funds.

Project Overview

The Salzgitter Group has commissioned ANDRITZ to supply a 100 MW electrolysis plant for the SALCOS® program, aimed at achieving CO2-free steel production. The plant will be located at the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH site and will utilize pressurized alkaline electrolyzer technology from HydrogenPro.

Production and Timeline

Starting in 2026, the plant is expected to produce approximately 9,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used to produce green steel, marking the beginning of industrial hydrogen utilization under the SALCOS® program.

Program Stages

The SALCOS® program will be implemented in three stages. The first stage, operational by 2026, includes a direct reduction plant, an electric arc furnace, and the 100 MW electrolysis plant. The complete transition to CO2-free steel production at the Salzgitter site is planned by the end of 2033.

Funding

Stage 1 of the SALCOS® program is financed through subsidies from the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Lower Saxony, along with substantial funds from Salzgitter AG.
