Coverage

What the chemXplore record holds, continent by continent, and how we measure it.

We track 4,371 plants and 2,616 projects in the chemical industry, 958 of them active. In the last three months we added 2,306 plants and 872 projects, and we keep adding them. The refineries in the record hold 90% of the world's crude refining capacity.

How we measure

Plants and projects are counts of what the record holds. A count shows breadth, not completeness: no public inventory lists every chemical plant, so we put no percentage on the record as a whole. A project is active when it has been announced and what it builds is not yet operating.

Refining is where we can check. Refining capacity is reported country by country, so the share is the crude distillation capacity of the refineries we track, against what the Energy Institute – Statistical Review of World Energy (2026) reports for the same countries.

The levels are our own judgement, from checking the record against industry sources:

  • Comprehensive: the major plants of every sector we cover are in the record, and new projects are added as they are announced.
  • Broad: most refining capacity and the larger chemical sites; smaller sectors and plants in part.
  • Expanding: refining largely covered, and whole sectors still being added.

Continents follow the UN's grouping, with North and South America apart, so Russia is counted in Europe and Turkey in Asia. Know of a plant or project we are missing? Tell us at [email protected].
