- The expansion will increase chlorine production from 15,000 t/year to 45,000 t/year.
- The investment for this expansion is 12 million euros.
- Completion is expected by the end of this year.
- Ercros will invest 27 million euros in Sabiñánigo between 2016-2020.
Approval and Investment
The Aragonese Institute for Environmental Management has granted Ercros an Integrated Environmental Authorization (AAI) to expand its chlorine production capacity in Sabiñánigo. This expansion will increase production from 15,000 t/year to 45,000 t/year using membrane technology, requiring an investment of 12 million euros.
Timeline and Strategic Plan
The expansion is part of Ercros' strategic investment plan, "Plan Act," covering 2016-2017. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. In the second phase (2018-2020), Ercros plans further investments, including expanding the pool water treatment tablet plant from 7,000 t/year to 28,000 t/year, totaling 27 million euros in Sabiñánigo.
Regulatory Compliance
This expansion aims to offset the reduction in chlorine production due to the mandatory closure of mercury-based plants in Flix and Vila-seca I, Tarragona, by December 11, 2017. The Sabiñánigo plant has used membrane technology since 2009, which complies with European and Spanish legislation as the Best Available Technology (BAT).
Additional Expansions
The Vila-seca I plant, also adapted to BAT technology, is expanding its chlorine production capacity to 120,000 t/year. The Generalitat de Catalunya granted the corresponding AAI for this plant in January 2017.
