Clariant and Shanghai Electric Partner for China's Energy Transition

At a glance
  • Shanghai Electric's biomass-to-green methanol plant in Taonan, China, started using Clariant's MegaMax catalysts.
  • The plant's second phase, with 200,000 tons/y green methanol and 10,000 tons/y SAF, starts in 2027.
  • The agreement includes R&D, engineering design, and supply of chemical equipment for green methanol, e-methanol, green ammonia, and SAF.

Project Overview

Clariant and Shanghai Electric have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to advance sustainable energy solutions in China. This partnership follows the successful startup of Shanghai Electric's biomass-to-green methanol plant in Taonan, Jilin Province, which utilizes Clariant's MegaMax methanol synthesis catalysts.

Future Expansion

The second phase of the project is set to begin production in 2027, with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year of green methanol and 10,000 tons per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This expansion aims to significantly boost the production of green methanol, green ammonia, and SAF in China.

Collaboration Details

The agreement will leverage Shanghai Electric's process competence and plant design capabilities alongside Clariant's catalyst expertise. The scope includes collaborative research and development, engineering design services, and the supply of chemical equipment. The focus will be on producing green methanol, e-methanol, green ammonia, and SAF, as well as gas purification.
