- Initial design and feasibility studies are under way, targeting project completion by end-2017.
- The project is part of a wider Chlorine Strategy, including expansions in Belgium.
- Investments include a large scale potassium hydroxide (KOH) facility in Belgium, expected online in late 2017.
- Options for the mercury cellroom at Martorell Site, Spain, are still being evaluated.
Project Overview
INOVYN has announced a significant investment to convert its mercury chlorine cellroom at Stenungsund, Sweden, to membrane technology. Initial design and feasibility studies are currently in progress, with the project targeted for completion by the end of 2017.
Chlorine Strategy
This conversion is part of INOVYN’s broader Chlorine Strategy, which includes the expansion of its membrane chlorine cellroom at Antwerp/Lillo, Belgium, expected to be operational in Q4 2016. Additionally, a large-scale potassium hydroxide (KOH) production facility at Lillo is anticipated to come online in late 2017.
European Asset Base
Upon completion, these projects will enhance INOVYN’s existing membrane-based production portfolio across Europe, with assets in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, and the UK. These investments aim to phase out mercury cellroom production in compliance with European regulations.
Future Plans
INOVYN is still evaluating options for its mercury cellroom at the Martorell Site in Spain. The current lack of competitively priced raw materials, particularly energy, makes future investment in cellroom conversion at this site less attractive.
