Recent developments
Materials for electrification
Component advances targeted EVs and storage: BASF's Ultrason® S replaced metals in alkaline electrolyzer frames, lowering mass and enabling molded integration. Aurubis secured a €200 million loan from the EIB to expand copper refining and recycling; copper remains critical for electrification. BASF launched GLYSANTIN ELECTRIFIED coolants for China’s LECC standard and renewed supply of cathode active materials from Schwarzheide, while Borealis unveiled a three-layer cast polypropylene concept for LIB pouch films.
Hydrogen and power-to-X
Green hydrogen deployment advanced as Lhyfe began delivering renewable hydrogen to Essent for boiler testing and announced a 200 MW Delfzijl plant. Clariant will supply catalysts to SYPOX for the world’s largest electric steam methane reformer, targeting low‑CO₂ syngas. Maritime pilots expanded with the ammonia-powered container ship Yara Eyde entering construction.
SAF and waste-to-fuels
SAF capacity progressed: USA BioEnergy’s biorefinery in Bon Wier, Texas selected FT and hydrocracking tech with long-term airline offtake. In the UK, NEXTCHEM will apply NX Circular gasification to residual waste for SAF. Axens commenced a 100% SAF unit in Asia, while Worley’s FEED will convert the Lysekil refinery to renewable diesel and SAF. Platform strategies included the Ecoplanta project in Tarragona and Moeve’s methanol-based pathway to e‑SAF.
Gas and LNG developments
Global gas remained active: TotalEnergies invested in Rio Grande LNG Train 4 with long-term offtake. A 20‑year SPA with Gunvor advanced Texas LNG’s Brownsville project. TotalEnergies signed with KOGAS for 1 Mtpa over 10 years, and Worley moved INPEX’s Abadi LNG Project in Indonesia into FEED with CCS. Upstream additions included bp’s five‑well Mediterranean program and Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project to process associated gas.
Grids, wind, and CO₂ networks
Grid funding scaled as RWE and Apollo formed a joint venture to fund Amprion’s expansion. Offshore wind supply chains advanced via the Świnoujście Offshore Terminal, though Ørsted revised 2025 EBITDA guidance on low wind speeds and delays. Hydrogen/CO₂ corridors progressed with the Delta Rhine Corridor project. RWE launched drone-based environmental monitoring at Kaskasi and continued agrivoltaics at Bedburg.
