TotalEnergies Begins Final Projects of Iraq's GGIP

Key highlights
  • TotalEnergies, Basra Oil Company, and QatarEnergy are executing the final two projects of the GGIP in Iraq.
  • The Common Seawater Supply Project will process 5 million barrels of seawater daily.
  • Ratawi oil field redevelopment aims to increase production to 210,000 bpd by 2028.
  • The Gas Midstream Project will process 300 Mcf/d of gas, fueling power plants for 1.5 million households.

Project Launch

TotalEnergies, in partnership with Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, has initiated the construction of the final two major projects under the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) in Iraq. These projects include the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP) and the full field development of the Ratawi oil field.

Seawater Supply Project

The CSSP, located near Um Qasr, will process and transport 5 million barrels of seawater per day to southern Iraq's main oil fields. This initiative aims to replace freshwater currently used from the Tigris, Euphrates, and aquifers, thereby alleviating regional water stress and freeing up to 250,000 cubic meters of freshwater daily for agriculture.

Ratawi Oil Field Development

The Ratawi field redevelopment, launched in September 2023, aims to boost production to 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) by early 2026, with a further increase to 210,000 bpd by 2028. The project will operate with no routine flaring, enhancing environmental sustainability.

Gas Midstream Project

The Gas Midstream Project (GMP), which began construction in early 2025, will process 300 million cubic feet per day (Mcf/d) of associated gas, including previously flared gas from other fields. This processed gas will be integrated into the national grid, powering plants with a capacity of approximately 1.5 gigawatts, sufficient for 1.5 million Iraqi households.
