Basra Oil Company (BOC) is a state-owned Iraqi oil company under the Ministry of Oil, headquartered in Basra. Formerly known as South Oil Company, it oversees the exploration, development, and production of crude oil and associated gas across southern Iraq, a core region for the country’s hydrocarbon output.
BOC manages major upstream assets and coordinates field operations with international partners through technical service agreements. Its responsibilities span reservoir management, drilling and workovers, water injection for enhanced recovery, associated gas handling, and operation of gathering, processing, and export infrastructure, including pipelines and terminals on the Gulf. As a central operator in Iraq’s energy sector, BOC plays a key role in maintaining oil supply reliability, improving production efficiency, and supporting initiatives to reduce gas flaring and strengthen the country’s export capacity.
