Project Cancellation
Shell Nederland Raffinaderij B.V. has decided not to continue with the construction of its biofuels facility at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park in Rotterdam. The decision follows a comprehensive commercial and technical evaluation, which concluded that the project would not be competitive enough to meet customer needs for affordable, low-carbon products.
Investment in Low-Carbon Solutions
Between 2023 and 2024, Shell invested $8 billion in lower carbon options, including power, carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen, and low-carbon fuels. In 2024, Shell traded over 10 billion litres of low-carbon fuels, significantly more than it produced, and became a leading supplier of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Commitment to the Netherlands
The Netherlands remains a strategic location for Shell, with investments totaling €6.5 billion in various energy transition projects. These include the Porthos CCS project for CO2 storage, the development of renewable hydrogen at Holland Hydrogen 1, and the electrification of manufacturing processes at Shell Chemicals Park Moerdijk.
