Investment Overview
Borealis has announced a EUR 4.5 million investment in the cracker furnaces at its Porvoo site in Finland. This investment aims to increase the share of renewable and recycled raw materials used in the production of ethylene and propylene, aligning with Borealis' Strategy 2030 and supporting the transition to a circular economy.
Project Details
The Porvoo steam cracker, part of a highly integrated petrochemical complex, has a nameplate capacity of 430 kilotons of ethylene and 263 kilotons of propylene per year. The facility thermally cracks feedstock such as naphtha, propane, butane, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into smaller molecules. The investment will modify three of the ten cracker furnaces in the olefins unit, enabling an annual production of 120 kilotons of base chemicals based on renewable and recycled feedstocks.
Timeline and Certification
The investment program has already commenced and is expected to be completed by 2025. The renewable-based and chemically recycled base chemicals produced at the Porvoo site have been awarded the ISCC PLUS certification. This voluntary scheme covers the entire supply chain based on mass balance accounting and ensures compliance with high environmental standards.
