Joint Venture Overview

IFF and Kemira have announced the formation of Alpha Bio, a joint venture focused on the commercial-scale production of renewable biobased materials. The venture involves an investment of approximately €130 million, with production slated to begin in late 2027. The facility will be located in Kotka, Finland, and aims to convert up to 44,000 metric tons of plant sugars into bioproducts, including high-performance biopolymers for various applications.

Technology and Production

Alpha Bio will utilize IFF's Designed Enzymatic Biomaterial™ (DEB) platform technology, which is integrated at the IFF biorefinery in Kotka. This technology leverages plant-based sugars and enzymes under mild process conditions to create biobased materials. The enzymatic polymerization process offers superior purity and consistency compared to conventional synthetic polymers, enhancing product performance across diverse applications.

Market Impact

The joint venture aims to provide sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived polymers, targeting key markets such as paper and board packaging, paper coatings, and water treatment. By replacing traditional fossil-based synthetic polymers, Alpha Bio seeks to meet the growing demand for high-performing and sustainable materials.

Employment and Economic Impact

Operating as an independent entity, Alpha Bio is expected to generate approximately 30 direct new jobs in the Kotka area. Additional employment opportunities are anticipated during the construction phase of the project, contributing to the local economy.
