Investment in Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy

TotalEnergies' Antwerp platform is advancing its decarbonization efforts through a significant investment in green hydrogen. As part of a 200 MW Air Liquide electrolyzer project, TotalEnergies has secured a tolling agreement for 130 MW, dedicated to producing 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This initiative is supported by the OranjeWind offshore wind project, which will provide green electricity, aiming to cut CO2 emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tons per year by the end of 2027.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

The Antwerp platform is set to contribute to the aviation industry's energy transition by producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). A project to produce 50,000 tons of SAF annually through coprocessing will be implemented in 2025. This method allows for the simultaneous treatment of hydrocarbons and biomass in a conventional refining unit, aiding aviation customers in reducing their carbon footprint.

Battery Storage and Grid Balancing

To support the decarbonization of industrial operations and address the need for grid balancing, the Antwerp platform has implemented process electrification and battery-based energy storage. With a power rating of 25 MW and a capacity of 75 MWh, the battery storage system is TotalEnergies' largest in Europe, helping to offset the intermittency of renewable energies and promote their development.

Petrochemical Market Adjustments

In response to overcapacity in the petrochemicals market, TotalEnergies plans to cease operations of its oldest steam cracker in Antwerp by the end of 2027. This decision follows the non-renewal of a major ethylene contract. The shutdown will allow the site to focus on a more recent steam cracker, with no layoffs expected. Affected employees will be offered retirement or internal transfers, subject to consultation and notification processes.
