Overview

Air Liquide and TotalEnergies are advancing European decarbonization with two major electrolyzer projects. These initiatives aim to produce renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

ELYgator Project

The ELYgator project involves a 200MW electrolyzer in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, expected to produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually. It will supply TotalEnergies’ industrial platform and other European industrial needs, utilizing renewable electricity from offshore wind farms. Supported by the EU’s Innovation Fund and the Dutch IPCEI program, the project is set to be operational by the end of 2027.

Joint Venture in Zeeland

A 50/50 joint venture between Air Liquide and TotalEnergies will develop a 250MW electrolyzer in Zeeland, Netherlands. This project aims to produce up to 30,000 tons of hydrogen annually, powered by renewable energy from TotalEnergies’ Oranjewind. Completion is targeted for 2029, pending final authorizations and investment decisions.

Technological and Financial Aspects

The combined investment for these projects exceeds €1 billion, with Air Liquide leveraging its joint venture with Siemens Energy for electrolyzer technology. These projects are part of Air Liquide's broader strategy to expand its low-carbon hydrogen production capabilities in Europe.

Impact and Goals

Upon completion, the projects are expected to avoid up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually. They represent a significant step towards decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and heavy mobility, aligning with Europe’s ambitions for decarbonized growth.
