Overview

Air Liquide is advancing European decarbonization with two major electrolyzer projects to produce renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. These initiatives aim to support industrial and mobility sectors in Europe.

ELYgator Project

The ELYgator project involves a 200MW electrolyzer in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, expected to produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually. It will supply TotalEnergies’ industrial platform and other European customers, utilizing renewable electricity from offshore wind farms. The project is supported by the EU’s Innovation Fund and the Dutch IPCEI program, with operations set to begin by the end of 2027.

Joint Venture in Zeeland

Air Liquide and TotalEnergies have formed a joint venture to develop a 250MW electrolyzer in Zeeland, Netherlands. This project aims to produce up to 30,000 tons of hydrogen annually, powered by renewable energy from TotalEnergies’ Oranjewind wind farm. Completion is targeted for 2029, pending final approvals.

Technological and Financial Aspects

Both projects represent a combined investment of over 1 billion euros and will leverage Air Liquide's electrolyzer technology, developed in partnership with Siemens Energy. The initiatives are expected to avoid up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, contributing significantly to Europe's decarbonization goals.
