Green Hydrogen Initiatives

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed agreements to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands. These projects aim to produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually using renewable energy, primarily from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm. The initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 450,000 tons per year at TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands, contributing to European renewable energy targets in transport.

Zeeland Electrolyzer Project

The companies will establish a joint venture to build and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery. Scheduled for commissioning in 2029, this project will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons per year. The project represents a €600 million investment, with funding sought from European and national subsidy programs.

Maasvlakte Electrolyzer Project

As part of Air Liquide's 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement for 130 MW to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for its Antwerp platform. This project, expected to be operational by the end of 2027, will reduce CO2 emissions at the Antwerp site by 150,000 tons per year. TotalEnergies will supply renewable electrons from the OranjeWind project to Air Liquide for conversion into green hydrogen.

Decarbonization Goals

TotalEnergies is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by using low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries. The company aims to cut its annual CO2 emissions by three million tons by 2030, having already contracted over 170,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for its refineries in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
