Project Overview
Polimery Police, a major project in the European chemical industry, has commenced polypropylene production under the Gryfilen® brand. The plant will produce 437,000 tonnes of polypropylene and 429,000 tonnes of propylene annually, with sales starting in August 2023. The project’s budget exceeds PLN 7.2 billion.
Technological Advancements
The plant employs state-of-the-art technologies: Oleflex UOP for polymer-quality propylene production using the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) method, and Unipol GRACE for polypropylene production. These technologies ensure low consumption of raw materials and energy, and high production flexibility, crucial in the competitive European plastics market.
Offshore Gas Terminal
The Polimery Police complex includes an Offshore Gas Terminal with handling and storage infrastructure for sourcing propane and ethylene by sea. This terminal is vital for expanding the commercial offering and enhancing Poland’s energy and raw material independence.
Strategic Importance
The project significantly boosts Poland’s plastics production capacity and reduces its trade gap. Its location in Police allows for flexible raw material sourcing globally, which is critical given recent geopolitical developments.
Hydrogen Production
The plant will also produce nearly 17,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually through the propane dehydrogenation process, reinforcing Grupa Azoty Group’s position in hydrogen technologies.
Construction and Timeline
The EPC contract for the project was signed on May 11th, 2019, with Hyundai Engineering Company, Ltd. The construction site was handed over on January 7th, 2020, and all work is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2023.
