- Grupa Azoty signed a contract with thyssenkrupp Uhde for a new ammonium nitrate plant in Tarnów.
- The plant will reduce energy consumption by over 250,000 GJ per year.
- Daily production capacity will be 1,500 tonnes of concentrated ammonium nitrate solution.
- Construction starts in Q1/Q2 2024, with completion by Q4 2025.
Project Overview
Grupa Azoty has partnered with thyssenkrupp Uhde to build a new concentrated ammonium nitrate solution plant in Tarnów, Poland. The project includes the preparation of licensing documentation and the supply of all necessary process equipment.
Efficiency and Environmental Impact
The new plant aims to enhance production efficiency by significantly reducing the energy intensity of the fertilizer manufacturing process. It is expected to cut energy consumption by over 250,000 GJ annually. Additionally, the plant will lower the consumption rates of basic raw materials, reduce operating costs, and mitigate the environmental impact by decreasing wastewater generation.
Production Capacity
Located on the premises of Grupa Azoty's Fertilizer Business Unit, the plant will replace an older, more energy-intensive facility. It will have a daily production capacity of 1,500 tonnes of concentrated ammonium nitrate solution, with concentrations of 94% or 86%. This will secure raw materials for further production of nitrate fertilizers in Tarnów, including Saletrosan and Saletrzak.
Technical Advancements
The incorporation of modern solutions in process equipment design, instrumentation, and control automation will significantly enhance the plant's overall technical safety. The project will utilize advanced ammonium nitrate technologies, including the use of low-pressure gaseous ammonia as feedstock without requiring an ammonia compressor.
Timeline
The next stage involves designing the ammonium nitrate production facility and associated infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in late Q1 or early Q2 of 2024, with completion expected by Q4 2025.
