Power2X and Advario to Build e-SAF Hub in Rotterdam

At a glance
  • The facility will produce over 250,000 tonnes/year of e-SAF using green hydrogen and methanol.
  • Advario's storage facility will have a capacity of 230,000 cubic meters.
  • The hub will meet 40% of Europe's e-SAF demand by 2030.
  • The site is located at the former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam.

Project Overview

Power2X and Advario are collaborating to establish a large-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic fuels in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility will produce over 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually, utilizing green hydrogen and imported green methanol as feedstock. This will be the largest e-SAF facility announced to date, capable of powering approximately 7,000 flights between Amsterdam and New York each year.

Infrastructure and Logistics

Advario is developing a storage and logistics facility with a capacity of around 230,000 cubic meters, supported by marine and rail facilities. This infrastructure will ensure a stable supply chain for the green molecules. The strategic location in the Port of Rotterdam provides direct access to European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, positioning it as a key hub for distributing sustainable aviation fuels.

Site Development

Advario acquired the 26-hectare former Aluchemie site in Rotterdam in April 2023. The site, with its waterfront access and proximity to a key hydrogen pipeline, is being transformed into a hub for new energy solutions. This development supports broader European decarbonization goals and aims to create future-proof solutions for sustainable energy.

Regulatory and Market Impact

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions, cutting lifecycle carbon emissions by 90% compared to conventional jet fuel. The ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation mandates increased use of SAF, including e-SAF, from 2030 onwards. The hub will contribute 40% of the required e-SAF volume when operational, playing a significant role in Europe's energy transition.
