Overview

ERA ONE, located in Frankfurt-Höchst, is Europe's largest Power-to-Liquid plant, producing up to 2,500 tonnes of carbon-neutral e-Fuels annually. This facility marks a significant step towards meeting the EU's 2030 and 2050 climate targets by providing commercial-scale synthetic fuels.

Technological Process

The plant utilizes CO2 from biogenic sources and green hydrogen to create synthetic crude oil, which is then refined into sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), e-Diesel, and other products. The CO2 is sourced from a biogas plant, while the hydrogen is a byproduct of chlorine production. These e-Fuels are drop-in ready, requiring no modifications to existing systems.

Strategic Importance

ERA ONE is a flagship project for scaling production technology, with plans to increase output by 2030. This expansion is crucial for meeting regulatory requirements like the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates sustainable aviation fuel quotas. The plant's modular design allows for efficient capacity expansion.

Financial Backing

The project is supported by a €70 million financing package, including €40 million in venture debt from the European Investment Bank and a €30 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. Additional funding comes from investors such as Piva Capital, HG Ventures, and others, highlighting the project's strategic role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors.
