Investment and Purpose
INERATEC has secured €70 million to construct Europe's largest e-Fuel production plant in Frankfurt. The funding comprises a €40 million venture debt loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and a €30 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. This investment aims to scale up e-Fuel production, focusing on decarbonizing aviation and other hard-to-abate sectors.
Production and Technology
The plant will produce up to 2,500 tons of e-Fuel annually, using INERATEC's Power-to-Liquid technology. This process combines green hydrogen and CO2 from biogenic sources to create synthetic fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), marine fuels, and e-Diesel. The CO2 is sourced from a biogas plant, while hydrogen is a by-product from a chlorine production facility.
Market and Regulation
The project aligns with the European ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates a minimum e-SAF blend of 1.2% by 2030. This regulatory framework creates market opportunities for synthetic fuels, supporting the EU's climate neutrality targets for 2030. The plant's output could significantly impact the aviation sector by replacing fossil kerosene on long-haul flights.
Partnerships and Goals
The collaboration between INERATEC, the EIB, and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst exemplifies public-private partnerships driving clean technology commercialization. The EU-Catalyst Partnership, launched at COP26, aims to develop large-scale green tech projects in Europe. This initiative supports the EU's commitment to innovative technologies that enhance competitiveness and sustainability.
