Arcadia Chooses Topsoe and Sasol for 2026 eFuels Plant in Denmark

At a glance
  • Arcadia's Vordingborg eFuels plant is scheduled for 2026.
  • The plant will produce sustainable aviation fuels to meet the EU's 1.2% RFNBO mandate by 2030.
  • The technology converts CO2 and H2 into eFuel for aviation.
  • The agreement is a major milestone before Arcadia's final investment decision.

Project Overview

Arcadia eFuels, Sasol, and Topsoe have signed a single license agreement for Arcadia’s Vordingborg eFuels plant, marking a significant milestone in the project's development. The plant is scheduled to be operational by 2026 and aims to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to help decarbonize the aviation industry.

Industry Need

According to the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA), only 300 million liters of SAF were produced in 2022, compared to the 450 billion liters needed annually to achieve CO2 emission targets by 2050. The Vordingborg plant will contribute to meeting the European Union's mandate of 1.2% RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of non-Biological Origin) by 2030.

Technological Collaboration

The agreement involves the use of proprietary technology (G2LTM) from Topsoe and Sasol, which converts CO2 and H2 into eFuel for aviation. This technology differs from traditional natural gas-based fuel production by using carbon dioxide, water, and power as feedstock. Water is converted into hydrogen through electrolysis, and synthesis gas is produced from carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Next Steps

The signing of this agreement is a precursor to Arcadia’s final investment decision. The collaboration aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the aviation and heavy transport industries, supporting the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable fuel production.
