Project Overview
A consortium led by KazMunayGas, Kazakhstan’s state-owned oil and gas company, has awarded the development of a steam cracker to a joint venture formed by Sinopec and Técnicas Reunidas. This contract is part of a strategic alliance formed by the two companies in September.
Investment and Financials
The total investment for the project is estimated at around €2.3 billion, with each partner in the joint venture contributing 50%. Sinopec will provide financial support for the execution of the project.
Timeline and Technology
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Lummus Technologies has been selected as the technology licensor for the steam cracker unit.
Location and Output
The steam cracker will be installed in the petrochemical complex being developed by the KazMunayGas-led consortium in the province of Atirau, on the Caspian Sea coast. The unit will use gas from Kazakhstan’s fields to produce petrochemicals, contributing to the production of approximately 1,300 kilotonnes per year (kta) of ethylene.
