- Synvina extends pilot phase to optimize FDCA production for PEF.
- The timeline for the Reference Plant startup is delayed by 24-36 months.
- The new expected operational date for the plant is 2023-2024.
- Technical improvements are needed in the production process.
Pilot Phase Extension
Avantium N.V. announced that Synvina, its joint venture with BASF, will extend the pilot phase to optimize future commercial-scale production of FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) in Antwerp. This decision follows a comprehensive feasibility assessment.
Feasibility Assessment Findings
The assessment confirmed strong product performance and customer demand for FDCA, the main building block for the new polymer PEF (polyethylenefuroate). However, it also identified technical steps that require improvement to ensure an efficient production process.
Timeline Adjustment
Due to the need for additional development work, the timeline for starting up the Reference Plant will be extended by 24 to 36 months. The new expected operational date for the plant is now set for 2023-2024.
Background
Synvina was established in October 2016 with the goal of building and operating the first commercial-scale plant to produce FDCA. This breakthrough building block for PEF offers superior performance and is suitable for applications in food and beverage packaging, automotive, and textile fibers.
