Project Overview
Avantium has commenced construction of its FDCA Flagship Plant at Chemie Park Delfzijl, Netherlands. This facility will be the world's first commercial FDCA factory, producing 5 kilotonnes of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) annually. FDCA is a crucial component for creating 100% plant-based, recyclable plastic material known as polyethylene furanoate (PEF).
Timeline and Support
The construction of the FDCA Flagship Plant is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023, with commercial production of PEF set to begin in 2024. The project has garnered significant support from various partners, including commercial entities, governments, engineering and supply chain partners, as well as financial and grant partners.
Funding and Regional Impact
One of the primary enablers of this project is the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), which has provided a €25 million grant through the Horizon 2020 "PEFerence" project. This funding aims to transform the traditionally gas-focused region around Delfzijl into a more sustainable and competitive area.
Location and Sustainability Goals
The new FDCA Flagship Plant is strategically located near Avantium’s demonstration plant for plantMEG™ and its pilot biorefinery, which produces glucose and lignin from non-food biomass. The Northern Netherlands is a prime location for green chemistry, with ambitions to achieve a fully sustainable chemical industry by 2050. The FDCA Flagship Plant aligns with these goals, supporting the transition to a circular economy and reducing reliance on fossil resources.
Employment Opportunities
The FDCA Flagship Plant will create approximately 50 highly skilled jobs, with recruitment already underway. Additionally, the project is expected to generate significant indirect employment opportunities in the region.
