Key highlights
  • Start-up of FDCA Flagship Plant delayed to mid-2026 due to titanium weld issues.
  • Additional €7 million in capital expenditure required for weld remediation.
  • Sales expected to commence in the second half of 2026.
  • Avantium is reviewing options for compensation for cost increases and delays.

Project Update

Avantium's FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands, is facing a delay in its start-up timeline. Originally planned for an earlier completion, the start-up is now expected by mid-2026. This delay is due to construction-related piping issues, specifically with titanium welds, discovered during commissioning.

Financial Impact

The remediation of the titanium welds will require an additional €7 million in capital expenditure. Avantium is currently exploring contractual and legal options to potentially secure compensation for these unexpected costs and delays.

Operational Progress

Despite the setbacks, commissioning and start-up activities are progressing. The utilities and sugar dehydration unit are operational, with efforts now focused on the oxidation and purification units. The company has made significant progress in weld repair activities, providing a clear path for the remaining start-up steps.

Future Outlook

Avantium plans to commence sales of its FDCA product under existing offtake agreements in the second half of 2026. The company is committed to ensuring a safe, reliable, and high-quality start-up of the plant.
