Avantium Approves Construction of FDCA Flagship Plant in The Netherlands

At a glance
  • Avantium secured €90 million in debt financing.
  • The FDCA Flagship Plant will have a capacity of 5 kiloton per annum.
  • The plant will produce FDCA for PEF, a plant-based recyclable plastic.
  • The plant aims to demonstrate the viability of large-scale PEF manufacturing.

Investment Decision

Avantium N.V. has made a positive Final Investment Decision (FID) on constructing its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, The Netherlands. This decision follows the fulfillment of three key conditions: securing sufficient financing, finalizing engineering and supply chain, and obtaining sufficient offtake commitments.

Financing Secured

The final outstanding financing condition was met with the recent signing of a €90 million committed debt financing term sheet. This milestone is crucial for moving forward with the project.

Plant Capacity and Production

The FDCA Flagship Plant will be the world's first to produce FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) on a commercial scale, with a capacity of 5 kiloton per annum. FDCA is the key building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a 100% plant-based, recyclable plastic material.

Commercialization and Market Potential

The plant aims to accelerate the commercialization of PEF, demonstrating the viability of large-scale manufacturing. Avantium plans to expand PEF applications, targeting a potential total end-market of $200 billion per year through technology licenses to global collaborators.
