Synvina is a bio-based chemicals venture formed in 2016 by Avantium and BASF to develop and commercialize furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and its polymer, polyethylenefuranoate (PEF). FDCA is a renewable building block produced from plant-derived sugars, and PEF is an emerging polyester intended for use in packaging, fibers, and other applications.
The company’s activities have centered on process development, pilot-scale production, application testing, and building supply chains for FDCA and PEF. Synvina has worked with industry partners to validate material performance and explore routes to commercial-scale manufacturing and licensing. Its focus reflects broader industry efforts to replace fossil-based plastics with bio-based alternatives while ensuring compatibility with existing converting and recycling systems.
