Investment and Production
Kaidi plans to build a €1 billion biofuel refinery in Kemi, Finland. The plant will produce 200,000 tons of biofuels annually, with 75% being biodiesel and 25% biogasoline. The refinery will use energy wood as its main feedstock, making it the first of its kind globally.
Economic Impact
The investment is expected to generate over €200 million in annual tax revenues. The refinery will create 150 full-time positions once operational, and the construction process will provide an additional 4,000 man-years of work. Hundreds of subcontracting jobs will also be created.
Timeline and Location
The final investment decision will be made by the end of the year. Construction is set to begin in 2017, with the plant expected to be operational by the end of 2019. The refinery will be located in Ajos, Kemi, on a site where Vapo originally planned a biorefinery.
Environmental and Regulatory Approvals
Kaidi has acquired environmental impact assessment approval from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Lapland. The company has also signed a Letter of Intent to purchase 33 hectares of land from the city of Kemi.
Technological Innovation
The second-generation biodiesel refinery will demonstrate that high-quality biodiesel can be sustainably produced from wood-based biomass. The biodiesel produced will be cleaner and of higher quality than first-generation biodiesel, and it can be mixed with fossil diesel in any proportion.
