AkzoNobel Expands Global MCA Capacity

At a glance
  • Delfzijl MCA facility in the Netherlands now exceeds 100,000 MT/year capacity.
  • Taixing MCA facility in China will also reach 100,000 MT/year capacity.
  • Key markets include agrochemicals, carboxymethylcellulose, surfactants, and thioglycolic acid.
  • Global MCA market is estimated at 650,000 MT/year.

Expansion of Delfzijl Facility

AkzoNobel has expanded its Delfzijl MCA facility in the Netherlands, increasing its capacity to over 100,000 MT/year. This facility, inaugurated in 2006 with an initial capacity of 70,000 MT/year, has been steadily upgraded using Lean Six Sigma methodologies.

Growth in Taixing Facility

The Taixing MCA plant in China, which started with a capacity of 25,000 MT/year in 2002, will also be expanded to reach 100,000 MT/year. This expansion aims to meet the growing demand in the Chinese and Asia-Pacific markets, which had already pushed the plant's capacity to 60,000 MT/year by 2010.

Market and Applications

The global MCA market is estimated at 650,000 MT/year. AkzoNobel's increased capacity will serve key markets such as agrochemicals, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), surfactants, and thioglycolic acid. The continuous MCA process ensures consistent, high-quality output with minimal byproducts.

Technological and Environmental Standards

Both the Delfzijl and Taixing plants utilize state-of-the-art proprietary technologies and adhere to best-in-class health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. These advancements provide a superior cost position and the lowest environmental footprint available in the market.

Global Operations

In addition to the Delfzijl and Taixing facilities, AkzoNobel operates MCA plants in the US and Japan through Denak, a joint venture with Denki Kagaku Kogyo K.K.
