Establishment and Inauguration

On January 20, 2000, BASF SONATRACH PropanChem S.A. was established in Tarragona, with BASF holding 51% and SONATRACH 49%. The cornerstone of the PDH plant was placed on September 15, 2000, and the first propylene was produced on January 27, 2003. The plant was officially inaugurated on March 16, 2004, with notable attendees including His Majesty King Don Juan Carlos I of Spain and other dignitaries from Algeria, Germany, and Spain.

Production and Capacity

The PDH plant has a production capacity of 350,000 tons of propylene annually. To date, it has produced over 2 million tons of propylene in nearly 10 years of operation. The propane required for production is imported from Algeria, and the propylene produced is supplied almost entirely to BASELL Polyolefins Iberica S.L. in Tarragona for conversion into polypropylene.

Employment and Infrastructure

The plant generates approximately 100 jobs. Additionally, a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts was constructed to ensure a long-term supply of electricity and steam. A propane tank was also built in the port of Tarragona to facilitate the necessary supply of propane.
