Project Overview
WasteFuel and ITC have initiated the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for a green methanol biorefinery in Ankara, Türkiye. This facility will be the first of its kind in Anatolia and among the largest globally. It will be located next to ITC's existing waste management facility, utilizing biogas from anaerobic digestion and landfill gas collection.
Green Methanol Production
The biorefinery aims to produce green methanol intended for use as a low-carbon fuel in the maritime shipping industry. This aligns with the industry's shift towards cleaner operations, with over 300 methanol-capable container ships expected by 2030. Green methanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, supporting compliance with emission reduction regulations.
Strategic Importance
ITC's Ankara site is a significant waste treatment facility, processing over 1.8 million metric tons of municipal waste annually. The project leverages ITC's operational expertise and proven technology, with support from Turkish government representatives. A final investment decision is anticipated in early 2026.
