Suomen Lantakaasu invests €80M in Kiuruvesi biogas plant, Finland

At a glance
  • The Kiuruvesi biogas plant will be completed in 2026.
  • The Ylä-Savo project investment totals €100M, with €19.2M from EU support.
  • The plant will liquefy 125 GWh of biogas annually.
  • Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S is the biogas plant supplier.

Project Overview

Suomen Lantakaasu Oy is constructing a biogas plant in Kiuruvesi, Finland, to produce renewable liquefied biogas from local agricultural waste, primarily cattle manure. The project includes a biogas plant and a liquefaction unit, with construction starting next winter and completion expected in 2026.

Investment and Funding

The total investment for the Ylä-Savo complex, which includes the Kiuruvesi plant and three smaller satellite facilities, is approximately €100 million. The project has received €19.2 million in EU recovery support, which is crucial for its realization. Final decisions on the satellite facilities depend on environmental permits and zoning processes.

Production Capacity

The Kiuruvesi plant will process manure from around 100 local farms, handling approximately 400,000 tons annually. It will liquefy about 125 GWh of biogas per year, equivalent to the fuel needs of 250 heavy-duty vehicles. The plant will also receive pressurized biogas from other facilities for liquefaction.

Supply Chain and Distribution

Suomen Lantakaasu Oy collects manure from farms and returns biofertilizer, a byproduct of biogas production, back to them. The liquefied biogas will be distributed through St1's network as fuel for heavy traffic. Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S is the chosen supplier for the biogas plant.

Future Plans and Impact

The company aims to produce one terawatt hour of renewable transport fuel, with additional central plants planned in Nurmo and other locations. The project supports Finland's national biogas target of four terawatt hours by 2030 and will create jobs in construction and logistics in Eastern Finland.
