SCA and St1 Launch Biorefinery for 200,000 Tons of Renewable Fuel in Gothenburg

At a glance
  • The biorefinery will produce 200,000 tons of renewable fuel annually.
  • SCA holds a 25% share in the facility.
  • The facility processes tall oil from SCA's pulp mills.
  • Products include SAF, HVO, bio-naphtha, and bio-LPG.

Inauguration of Biorefinery

SCA and St1 have inaugurated a biorefinery in Gothenburg, Sweden, marking a significant milestone for SCA. The facility, where SCA holds a 25% share, is the first to produce renewable vehicle fuel for the company. The biorefinery has been in a start-up phase since the beginning of the year and is now operational.

Production and Capacity

The facility will produce 200,000 tons of renewable fuel annually, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), biodiesel (HVO), bio-naphtha, and bio-LPG. Tall oil, a by-product from SCA's pulp mills, will be processed at the new factory, enhancing resource efficiency and contributing to climate benefits.

Climate Impact

The combined production of biofuel at the facility is estimated to create an annual climate benefit of around 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. This aligns with SCA's goal of increasing its positive contribution to climate efforts, which currently compensates for approximately a quarter of Sweden's territorial emissions.

Government Support

Energy, Business and Industry Minister Ebba Busch attended the inauguration, highlighting the importance of increased domestic biofuel production for Sweden and the EU to achieve ambitious climate goals. The new biorefinery is seen as a crucial step towards net-zero emissions, addressing the need for biofuels in transportation that cannot be electrified.
