Investment and Production
Energy company St1 has decided to construct a new biorefinery at its Gothenburg refinery in Sweden. The facility will be capable of processing a wide range of feedstocks to produce renewable fuels such as HVO diesel, jet fuel, and naphtha. Production is expected to commence in 2022, significantly reducing CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels.
Financial Commitment
Over the past two years, St1 has invested in the Gothenburg refinery, aiming for an annual production of 200,000 tonnes of renewable fuels. The total investment, including a hydrogen production plant, renewable fuels production plant, and dedicated tank farm, is approximately 200 million euros. New infrastructure and utility facilities will also be installed to support feedstock imports and the production and distribution of renewable fuels.
Technological Advancements
St1 has extensive experience in producing advanced fuel ethanol from various waste streams. One of its ethanol production units is integrated into the Gothenburg refinery. The company is also piloting advanced fuel ethanol production from cassava starch mill waste in Thailand and developing new ethanol production technologies focused on ligno-cellulosic feedstocks. The first Cellunolix® demonstration biorefinery, which manufactures ethanol from sawdust, is located in Kajaani, Finland.
