Project Overview
Plug Power plans to develop three green hydrogen production plants in Finland, aiming to produce 850 tons per day (TPD) of green hydrogen by 2030, with a final investment decision (FID) expected by 2025/2026. The projects will utilize 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzer capacity and support the production of ammonia and green direct reduced iron (DRI), contributing to Europe's decarbonization efforts.
Strategic Locations
The sites will be located in Kokkola, Kristinestad, and Porvoo. Kokkola will generate 85 TPD of liquid green hydrogen and up to 700 kilotons of green ammonia per year. Kristinestad will produce green hydrogen for green steel production, while Porvoo will produce up to 100 TPD by 2030 for local mobility and export.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Plug is partnering with Hy2Gen for ammonia production and GravitHy for DRI/HBI production. Hy2Gen is backed by Hy24, Mirova, CDPQ, Technip Energies, and Trafigura. GravitHy is supported by EIT InnoEnergy, Engie, Forvia, IDEC, and Primetals. These partnerships aim to develop hydrogen derivatives and decarbonize the steel value chain.
Economic Impact
The projects are expected to create around 1,000 direct jobs and over 3,000 indirect jobs, significantly boosting the local economy. The investment will enhance European energy security and contribute to Finland's goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.
Infrastructure and Support
Plug has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Fingrid and Gasgrid to ensure electric grid capacities and develop hydrogen infrastructures. The projects will support the development of green electricity and hydrogen around the European backbone pipeline near the Bothnian Bay.
