Project Overview
Evonik Industries has initiated the construction of a new plant in Marl, Germany, to produce functionalized polybutadienes. The plant will have an annual capacity of several thousand metric tons and is expected to be completed by mid-2013. This investment, in the mid double-digit million € range, will create 15 new jobs.
Product Applications
The functionalized polybutadienes, to be marketed under the name POLYVEST® HT, are primarily used in sealing compounds for insulated glass windows and adhesives for the automotive and electronics industries. These products contribute to resource efficiency and support the growing demand for sustainable solutions.
Strategic Location
The new plant will benefit from the existing infrastructure and raw material supplies at the Marl Chemical Park. This strategic location allows Evonik to utilize synergies with its current polybutadiene plants, enhancing operational efficiency.
Investment in Germany
In the first half of 2012, Evonik invested €208 million out of a total €391 million in fixed assets in Germany. These investments focus on growth projects, optimizing and expanding existing facilities, and developing new products and research initiatives.
Market Demand
There is significant demand for products that enhance resource efficiency, particularly in Germany and Europe. Functionalized polybutadienes are used in double and triple glazed windows and adhesives for lightweight vehicle construction. The automotive industry increasingly uses adhesives alongside traditional welding processes and for non-weldable composite materials.
Extended Portfolio
With the new plant, Evonik expands its portfolio of polyesters, polymethacrylates, amorphous poly-alpha-olefins, and polybutadienes for the adhesive and sealant industries, offering comprehensive solutions from a single source.
