Ammonia Terminals Modification

Yara International plans to modify its ammonia terminals in Brunsbüttel and Rostock, Germany, to handle up to 3 million tons of ammonia. This modification will enable the handling of approximately 530,000 tons of hydrogen, supporting the growth of the hydrogen economy in Germany.

Clean Ammonia as a Hydrogen Carrier

Clean ammonia is a sustainable feedstock for various industries and applications. It serves as a hydrogen carrier for the transport sector and as a carbon-free shipping fuel. Additionally, it can be used as an emission-reducing additive in coal-fired power plants. Yara aims to increase its global production of clean ammonia to meet Germany's emerging market demand.

Production and Import Capacity

By summer 2023, Yara's export terminal in Brunsbüttel will be modified to also handle imports. The terminal in Rostock will increase its imported volumes, allowing Yara to deliver up to 3 million tons of clean ammonia if demand exists. With additional tank capacity, Yara can further expand its import capabilities.

Decarbonized Ammonia Production

Yara Clean Ammonia is rolling out a portfolio of decarbonized ammonia production. Green ammonia is produced using renewable energy and electrolyzers, while blue ammonia production involves capturing and permanently storing carbon emissions. Together, these methods contribute to the production of clean ammonia.

Largest Ammonia Storage in Germany

Yara operates Germany's largest ammonia storage capacity, with two deep sea terminals in Brunsbüttel and Rostock. The Rostock terminal currently imports 600 kt of ammonia annually. Yara's existing assets and expertise will be crucial for a rapid ramp-up of new ammonia storage facilities.

Collaboration with German Government

Yara Deutschland and Yara Clean Ammonia are collaborating closely with the German Government and local business partners to support the hydrogen economy through their ammonia infrastructure and extensive operational experience.
