Plant Operations and Investment
Versalis' Crescentino plant, acquired in November 2018, is set to be fully operational by the first half of 2020. The facility has undergone significant upgrades with an investment exceeding 15 million euros. The plant is designed for industrial-scale bioethanol production and incorporates advanced technologies.
Technological Advancements
The Crescentino plant utilizes the proprietary PROESA® technology, recognized as one of the most innovative in the biomass chemistry sector. This technology enables the production of bioethanol and other renewable products from second-generation sugars.
Energy Independence and Sustainability
The layout of the Crescentino site allows for complete water recycling and energy independence. The biomass power plant generates renewable electricity, and lignin is used as feedstock for the power plant, ensuring the site operates sustainably without relying on external energy sources.
Research and Development
Versalis Biotech Research Centres at Rivalta Scrivia and Novara are actively working on further developments. Their focus includes producing a range of fermentative renewable products such as bio-oils for biorefinery, biodegradable polymers (PHAs), intermediates for biopolymers, and biochemicals. Additionally, they are exploring new market applications for lignin.
