- The EIB approved a €264 million loan to Snam for biomethane integration.
- The first €140 million tranche was signed to build 240 km of pipelines.
- The project aims to transport 12,000 GWh/year of biomethane.
- The initiative aligns with the EU's REPowerEU and Italy's NRRP goals.
Loan Approval and Purpose
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a loan of up to €264 million to Snam. This funding aims to integrate biomethane production plants into Italy’s gas network, promoting a sustainable energy transition.
First Tranche and Infrastructure Development
The first tranche of €140 million has been signed, marking the start of constructing 240 kilometers of new pipelines. These pipelines will connect biomethane production facilities to the national gas transmission network.
Energy Capacity and Goals
The new infrastructure is designed to transport up to 12,000 GWh of renewable energy annually, equivalent to 1.13 billion cubic meters of biomethane. This effort supports the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and aims to produce 5 billion cubic meters of biomethane per year by 2030.
Alignment with EU Initiatives
The investments align with the EU taxonomy and the REPowerEU Plan, which seeks to enhance energy security by diversifying sources and increasing low-carbon renewable energy. This project contributes to reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and supports strategic autonomy for both Italy and the EU.
