Loan Approval and Purpose
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a loan of up to €264 million to Snam. This funding aims to integrate biomethane production plants into Italy's gas transmission network, supporting a transition to a more sustainable energy system.
First Tranche and Infrastructure Development
The first tranche of €140 million was signed, marking the start of constructing 240 kilometers of new pipelines. These pipelines will connect biomethane production facilities to the national gas network, facilitating the transport of up to 12,000 GWh of renewable energy annually.
Alignment with EU and National Goals
The project aligns with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and the European Union's REPowerEU plan. These initiatives aim to diversify energy sources and increase the share of low-carbon renewable energy, enhancing energy security and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Strategic Importance
This investment is part of broader efforts to strengthen Italy's energy infrastructure, ensuring a flexible and efficient system that supports source diversification. The project contributes to achieving the NRRP's target of producing 5 billion cubic meters of biomethane annually by 2030.
