Thyssenkrupp to Build Fertilizer Plant in Poland

At a glance
  • The plant will produce 1,265 metric tons of nitric acid and 1,200 tons of ammonium nitrate per day.
  • The contract value is in the lower three-digit million euro range.
  • ORLEN aims to increase fertilizer production capacity by 50% to 1.461 million tons per year by 2022.
  • EnviNOx technology will reduce annual emissions by around 3,200 tons of N2O and 1,000 tons of NOx.

Project Overview

Thyssenkrupp’s Industrial Solutions has secured a contract to build a new fertilizer plant in Wloclawek, Poland, for ANWIL, a subsidiary of PKN ORLEN. The plant will produce 1,265 metric tons of nitric acid and 1,200 tons of ammonium nitrate per day, utilizing thyssenkrupp’s EnviNOx process to reduce greenhouse gases.

Investment and Scope

The contract, valued in the lower three-digit million euro range, includes technology licenses, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the new facilities. This project is part of ORLEN’s larger investment program to expand its fertilizer portfolio and develop new value chains in the petrochemical industry.

Capacity Expansion

By 2022, ORLEN aims to increase its fertilizer production capacity in Wloclawek by 50%, reaching 1.461 million tons per year to meet growing demand. This expansion is a significant step in ORLEN’s strategy to enhance its market position and production capabilities.

Environmental Impact

Thyssenkrupp’s EnviNOx technology will be employed to treat tail gases from nitric acid production, converting harmful laughing gas (N2O) and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, oxygen, and water. This will reduce the plant’s annual emissions by approximately 3,200 tons of N2O and 1,000 tons of nitrogen oxide, equating to a CO2 reduction of about 1 million tons per year.
