Investment and Location
Södra invested in a biomethanol production facility in 2017, located at their pulp mill in Mönsterås. This plant is the first of its kind in the world, producing commercial biomethanol from forest biomass.
Production and Process
Biomethanol is produced from the crude methanol recovered during the pulp manufacturing process at Södra’s mills. This initiative is part of Södra’s strategy to achieve fossil-free transportation by 2030 and supports a circular economy by utilizing all raw materials efficiently.
First Delivery
The first pilot delivery of biomethanol will be sent to Emmelev A/S, a Danish company that produces biodiesel from local canola. Emmelev A/S will use the biomethanol as a substitute for fossil methanol in their production process.
Future Prospects
Emmelev A/S aims to produce 100% renewable biodiesel, relying on locally sourced raw materials from Danish canola and Swedish forests. This collaboration is expected to secure fuel supplies for heavy road transport, buses, and construction machinery, contributing to the transformation of the energy sector.
