- The plant will process up to 50 tons-per-day of post-consumer polystyrene feedstock.
- Agilyx's depolymerization technology will recycle polystyrene into its original liquid monomer.
- The project aligns with the EU Plastics Strategy to increase recycling rates.
- The initiative aims to create a novel recycling infrastructure for styrenics in Europe.
Project Overview
Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) and Agilyx have announced a collaboration with INEOS Styrolution and Trinseo to develop a commercial-scale polystyrene (PS) chemical recycling plant in Europe. The facility will process up to 50 tons-per-day of post-consumer PS feedstock.
Technology and Process
Agilyx's proprietary depolymerization technology will be used to recycle polystyrene back into its original liquid monomer. This technology has demonstrated the unique capability of polystyrene to be fully recycled, as shown in tests with post-consumer PS food packaging waste.
EU Recycling Goals
The project supports the European Commission's recycling goals by significantly increasing PS recycling rates and closing the loop with food-grade recycled content. This initiative is part of the broader EU Plastics Strategy to enhance recycling infrastructure and sustainability.
Future Prospects
SCS aims to drive up European styrenics recycling rates and create a novel recycling infrastructure for styrenics in Europe. The collaboration between INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo, and Agilyx is a crucial step towards achieving these goals and ensuring that polystyrene can be continuously recycled.
