Investment and Modernisation

The ORLEN Unipetrol Group has invested CZK 370 million (16 million Euro) to modernise its ammonia production unit in Litvínov. This upgrade aims to enhance production efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

Project Timeline

The modernisation process began in 2018, with the construction of the new reactor starting in January 2021. The reactor body was positioned in November 2021, and after successful catalyst reduction and warranty tests, it became operational in the spring of this year.

Technical Specifications

The new R-201 ammonia reactor weighs over 200 tonnes, has a diameter of approximately two metres, and stands almost 22 metres tall. It is made of forged, hot-rolled steel with a wall thickness of over 120 millimetres. The reactor can sustain a maximum overpressure of almost 32 MPa and operates between -10 °C and 220 °C.

Production Capacity

The reactor's production capacity is up to 500 tonnes of ammonia per day on the primary circuit and between 380 and 410 tonnes per day on the secondary circuit. The new equipment's fittings are structurally adapted to increase the recovery rate while maintaining existing operational parameters.

Ammonia Production

Ammonia is produced by synthesising hydrogen and nitrogen and is used widely in the chemical industry. It is a colourless, corrosive liquid with an alkaline reaction and a pungent odour, sold as liquefied gas.
