Project Overview

Tessenderlo Kerley International has commenced construction of a new liquid fertilizer plant at the Chemelot site in Geleen, Netherlands. The facility will produce Thio-Sul® (ammonium thiosulfate/ATS), a fertilizer used for large-scale crops, arboriculture, and vegetable production. The plant is expected to be operational by mid-2024 and will employ approximately 20 people.

Market Expansion

This new plant will be Tessenderlo Kerley International's second Thio-Sul® production facility in Europe, following the first plant launched in Rouen, France, in September 2017. The Geleen facility aims to meet the growing demand for liquid fertilizers in the European market, supplementing sulfur nutrients and reducing nitrogen losses.

Strategic Integration

The new plant will work in conjunction with Tessenderlo Kerley Fleuren, a tank storage and transshipment company based in Cuijk, Netherlands, acquired by Tessenderlo Group in early 2022. This integration will strengthen Tessenderlo Kerley International's position in the Western European liquid fertilizer market and support its sustainability goals by bringing liquid fertilizers closer to its customers.

Local Impact

Loek Radix, Executive Director of Chemelot, highlighted the positive impact of the new plant on safety, sustainability, and competitiveness, aligning with the Chemelot 2050 strategy. Alderman Yvonne Salvino-Meijer of Sittard-Geleen emphasized the importance of innovation, sustainability, and circularity for the region's future.

Engineering and Construction

The engineering and construction of the plant are being managed by LGI (Le Gaz Intégral), the same company that built the first Thio-Sul® plant in Rouen, France.
