Construction and Location
The construction of the Fintoil refinery began in early 2021 at the Port of HaminaKotka, a chemicals port in Hamina, Finland. The port features a large container terminal and specializes in handling and storing various liquids.
Logistics and Transportation
Special attention has been given to logistics and transportation connections. The refinery has access to an electrified rail connection, extensive loading docks, and a nearby motorway, ensuring efficient transport and logistics.
Production Process
The refinery's production process is based on fractional distillation, using heat energy and negative pressure to separate raw materials into desired fractions. This method was developed in 1913 by Finnish chemist Alfons Hellström at the Enso-Gutzeit plants in Kotka, close to the current refinery site.
Production Capacity and Focus
Operations are set to begin in the summer of 2022, with an initial feed capacity of 200,000 tons of crude tall oil. Two-thirds of the production will be dedicated to renewable fuels, while the remaining third will focus on other sustainable, renewable products. Fintoil aims to be the third-largest crude tall oil refiner, holding a 10% market share, with potential for future capacity increases.
Technological Advancements
The refinery's advanced and energy-efficient production process is provided by Neste Engineering Solutions. This collaboration grants Fintoil access to NEXPINUS™ technology, specifically designed for producing second-generation renewable biodiesel.
