Plant Launch
Carbios has opened an industrial demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand, France, utilizing its enzymatic recycling technology, C-ZYME®. This plant is located at the Cataroux site.
Technology Validation
The plant aims to validate the technical, environmental, and economic performance of the C-ZYME® enzymatic PET recycling process. By the end of 2022, the operation will produce complete engineering documents for a 40,000-tonne/year capacity reference unit and future factories under licensing agreements.
Operational Details
The facility includes a 20m3 depolymerization reactor capable of processing 2 tonnes of PET per cycle, equivalent to 100,000 bottles. A team of 10 people is optimizing operating parameters and producing monomer batches, with initial hydrolysis successfully confirming the process upscaling.
Recycling Process
The C-ZYME® process uses an enzyme to depolymerize PET found in various plastic and textile items. The depolymerized monomers are purified and repolymerized into PET of comparable quality to virgin PET derived from petrochemicals. This method allows unlimited recycling of all types of PET waste, including clear, colored, opaque, complex plastics, and polyester textiles, producing 100% recycled and recyclable PET goods that maintain virgin quality.
