Expansion Details
Ercros will expand the chlorine and caustic soda production capacity at its Vila-seca I plant by 26,000 t/year, with the new capacity expected to be operational by the end of 2018. This expansion will increase the total production capacity of chlorine-soda to 191,000 t/year.
Market Position
Currently, Ercros holds a 59% share of Spain's chlorine-soda production capacity, making it the leading manufacturer in the country. The expansion will further reinforce its leadership position in the sector.
Previous Expansions
This is the second expansion at the Vila-seca I plant, following a successful increase of 65,000 t/year in December 2017. Additionally, the Sabiñánigo factory saw a 15,000 t/year increase in capacity in February 2018.
Technology
Since December 11, 2017, all of Ercros' chlorine production has utilized membrane technology, which is considered the best available technology and is not affected by the European Union's prohibition on mercury technology. The Vila-seca I factory was the first in Spain to adopt membrane technology in 1992, and it remains the largest chlorine-soda production plant in the country. The Sabiñánigo factory has used membrane technology since 2009.
