Expansion Plans
AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemicals business is in the design phase of expanding chloromethanes production capacity in Germany. This follows the recent conversion of its mercury-based chlor-alkali plant in Frankfurt to modern membrane technology, which increased chlorine raw material availability.
Strategic Steps
The next step involves debottlenecking the chloromethanes facilities to further increase capacity. Jürgen Baune, General Manager for Chlor-Alkali and Chloromethanes, stated that this move aims to stretch the current asset base to meet growing customer demand and enhance asset integrity.
Customer Benefits
Werner Fuhrmann, Executive Committee member responsible for Specialty Chemicals, highlighted that expanding chloromethanes capacity will boost productivity at the Frankfurt cluster and provide supply chain benefits for customers. This aligns with the company’s strategy to grow alongside its customers as a reliable supplier.
Applications
Chloromethanes are crucial intermediates in producing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, refrigerants, silicone polymers, and fluoropolymers. They are also important for the construction and automotive industries, water treatment, cookware, and electronics.
Market Position
AkzoNobel holds leading market positions for most of its chloromethanes products and applications in Europe.
