DSM Invests in Emmen: Jobs and Environmental Gains

At a glance
  • €30 million invested over five years
  • Energy consumption decreased by over 30%
  • Water consumption almost halved
  • New system reduces volatile organic compound emissions to almost zero

Investment and Upgrades

Royal DSM has completed a €30 million investment over the past five years at its DSM Engineering Plastics facility in Emmen. This investment has transformed the site into an ultramodern manufacturing facility, significantly enhancing its sustainability and operational efficiency.

Environmental Impact

The new capture system at the Emmen plant uses waste water from production to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds to almost zero. Additionally, the system reuses 80% of the water from the production process, contributing to a 30% reduction in energy consumption and nearly halving water usage.

Local Collaboration

DSM leveraged both internal expertise and local knowledge from companies in and around Emmen for this initiative. The waste water is treated at the Emmtec industrial park’s water purification plant, with plans to further process it into energy in the future.

Broader Vision

This investment aligns with DSM’s vision for 2020, emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and partnerships. While DSM’s growth is expected to occur mainly outside Europe, the company remains committed to investing in R&D, innovation, and production within Europe and the Netherlands.

Production and Applications

In Emmen, DSM produces high performance plastics used globally in the automotive, packaging, and electronics industries, as well as by domestic appliance manufacturers. The investment ensures that these products are made more sustainably, meeting the increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives.
