Evonik, a German specialty chemicals company, is investing a significant amount of money in the construction of a new production plant for bio-based and fully biodegradable rhamnolipids. Rhamnolipids are biosurfactants used in shower gels and detergents, and there is a growing demand for environmentally friendly surfactants worldwide. The investment strengthens Evonik's partnership with consumer goods group Unilever and allows them to expand their market position in the biosurfactants industry. The plant is expected to be operational in two years. Evonik's goal is to increase its share of system solutions in its life sciences division from 20% to over 50% by 2030.
